The tone is honest, calm and practical. Addiction is taken seriously without turning the person into a problem to be managed.
A personal recovery brand built on lived experience and straight conversation
Start Within Recovery is deliberately personal. People and families come here because they want someone who can talk about addiction without shock, distance or judgement.
Darren helps people face what they have been avoiding
Darren's work is based on lived experience of addiction and recovery, first-hand contact with treatment settings, and a direct way of speaking to people who are tired of pretending everything is fine.
He is not trying to be a faceless clinic. Start Within Recovery is for individuals, families and professionals who want private support, practical accountability and an honest view of the next step.
"I am not here to do the work for you. I am here to help you start it honestly."
Darren O'Neill, Start Within Recovery
A reminder that no one gets through the hardest moments alone
In December 2025, Darren was hospitalised in Bali after being hit by a severe strain of malaria. His liver and kidneys were failing, sepsis had set in, and the situation became critical enough for his children to fly from London on Boxing Day, December 26, 2025, to be with him.
With the skill of the doctors, his family beside him, and love from people in recovery and his group in Spain, he survived. He now continues his own recovery, stays close to the routines and people that keep him well, and uses that lived experience to help others take their next step.
It reinforced something that already sits at the heart of Start Within Recovery: people need connection, practical help and a circle that does not disappear when life gets frightening.
Connection is not a side issue. It is part of staying well.
Darren's life now includes family, friends, sport and a strong padel group. Many of the people around the game have found that exercise, routine and belonging can become a practical way to protect recovery.
Start Within Recovery brings that same grounded approach into coaching: less performance, more honesty, and a steady focus on what actually helps someone live differently.
Private support is not a substitute for emergency care, detox, medical treatment or residential rehab when those are needed.
Client stories, reviews and photos should only appear with explicit permission. Trust is more important than fake proof.
Support can be one-to-one, family-based, practical or referral-focused.
The right route depends on risk, willingness, location and whether the person needs counselling, recovery coaching, sober companion work, family intervention support, aftercare or rehab referral guidance.
